Charles H. Harper, longtime resident of Port Washington, passed away on Oct. 12, 1999 in Glen Cove at the age of 83 of complications from chronic renal failure. Born in Brooklyn to Charles H. and Irene Johnston Harper, Charlie was raised in Port Washington and spent the last 35 years of life here. After retirement from a career in labor relations with Great Lakes Carbon Corporation in NY, he was active in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Societ and his alma mater, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was preceded in death by his wife Laura. He is survived by his sister Marion Chesley of Pittsford, NY; four sons, Charles H. "Hank" Harper (Susan) of San Mateo, CA, Thomas H. Harper (Patti), of The Woodlands, TX, Andrew S. Harper (Robin) of Plano, TX and Stephen M. Harper (Debby) of San Francisco, CA; and grandchildren Chad, Dan, Becky, Erin, Dan, Chris, Patrick and Paul Harper. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 at St. Stephen's Church in Port Washington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Endowment Fund of St. Stephen's Church or to the Class of 1937 Scholarship Fund, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY 12180.
Elena Poulos Rivers, 41, formerly of Port Washington, died on Nov. 1, 1999. Wife of Geoffrey. Daughter of Dorothea and Samuel Poulos. Sister of Michael (Karen), Peter (Beth) and Maria Poulos. Aunt of Allyson, Kayla, Sam and Elizabeth. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Service at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Resurrection. Rita R. Renison, 80, of Port Washington, died on Nov. 4, 1999. Daughter of the late Elizabeth and Edward Renison. Sister of the late Joseph E. Renison. Aunt of Joseph, Tom and Richard Renison. Maurice Romig, a Port Washington resident for more than 40 years, died on Nov. 8, 1999. He was 78 years old. He was a 2nd lieutenant in the US Marine Corps during WWII and proudly served his country from 1942 to 1946 in the South Pacific. He was also an avid bowler with his wife while they worked in Westbury together for many years. Mr. Romig was predeceased by his wife Monica. He is survived by his son Christopher Romig of Sarasota, FL, and his daughter Megan Nerdales of Hicksville. Grandfather of Erik, Elisabet, Katis and Patricia. Brother of Hattie Sartor.
