Three Vie for Water Commissioner Spot
With the announcement that Water Commissioner Betty Forquer will be stepping down after 18 years of service, three candidates have filed nominating petitions for her position. Ellen Markowski, Peter Meyer and Bob Tarleton have placed their names on the ballot for this year's Water District election. Voting will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the Polish American Hall from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A Moving and Meaningful Veterans Day Observance
Some silences are awkward, but the silence that filled the Sousa Bandshell crowd at 11 a.m. on Veterans Day was not; rather, it was deeply felt and solemn, as the 1999 observance of the contributions and sacrifices of our local and country's veterans began. With the Port Washington detachment of the Marine Corps Color Guard flanking him on one side, and other honored veterans around him, Bob Click, Commander of American Legion Post 509 of Port Washington, began the proceedings by explaining that Veterans Day this year was doubly sad because of the recent passing of "Uncle" George Bergman, nearly 102 years old and a Port favorite, who had served in World War I. Veterans' Day, Commander Click said, was the time "when a grateful nation pays respect to all living veterans."

On The Bay
In 1992, the attention of "On The Bay" was called to the Loda family by their participation in the "America 500" which retraced Columbus's voyage from Spain to the new world. For their trip to Spain, a send-off was held at the Town Dock.

PYA Manhasset PAL Junior Football
In the first game, the Cowboys in White, sponsored by Manhasset Sports Shop, won the Championship of the Junior Football League by remaining undefeated. The Cowboys defeated the Redskins in Maroon, sponsored by Frank's Pizza, by a score of 18-0. In the first period, Tyler Corcoran threw a pass to Tommy Mansfield who ran 38 yards for the touchdown. The point after touchdown attempt was stopped by Chris Dicerbo. In the second period, Maalik Oliver ran 42 yards for a touchdown. Again, the point after touchdown attempt was stopped, this time by Tristan Miller. In the third period, DJ Cisek ran 25 yards on a double reverse for the touchdown. Once again, the point after attempt was stopped. Playing well on defense for the Cowboys were Zack Wool, Patrick English, Sean Levinger and Mike Impellizeri. For the Maroon, Kyle Gans played well on offsense and defense. Billy Coughlin recovered a fumble. Chris Lyons and Pat Lyons had a number of tackles and Greg Novick ran well.
