As your reporter on Oct. 29 heard over the radio the attention-getting accounts of the Yankees' parade, her first thought was of just where George Vecsey would be in it all. She decided to phone Marianne for details. It was George who answered. As the reporter exclaimed surprise, he started to explain. She asked him please to express himself in writing. Certainly all lovers of our bay will appreciate reading his thoughts.
"Thinking about kayaking on Manhasset Bay helped get me through a solid six weeks of baseball.
"When my feet were cold in the outdoor auxiliary press box, when the stadium loudspeaker blared inane jingles, when the hours dragged in Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Dallas, Atlanta, Flushing and the Bronx, I knew there would still be some glorious days in November when the water would still be tolerable and the sun bright and the leaves vivid, and I could get out on the bay in my kayak and be totally alone, and feel sane and healthy again.
"Saturday, Oct. 30, was the day. Glorious."
The first day of frostbiting. Sunday, Oct. 31, on Mill Pond, could not have been more beautiful. Seven M Class boats sailed nine races. The wind was south-southwest, 10 knots. Every Saturday, another class, the ODOM (one-design, one-meter) will be raced. Perry Lengton, an active member of KYC, who joined the group at Mill Pond last year, will participate in ODOM activity.
The four clubs on the bay are now out of commission. Frostbiting at MBYC will start on Sunday, Nov. 7.
