On Friday, Oct. 22, the boys varsity soccer team met Farmingdale in their second to last game of the regular season. The Vikings went into this game with seniors Mario Lavacca and Jesse Dinner out due to injury. The first half of this game was fast-paced; though both teams had solid offense, neither scored a goal. This half also gave the teams an opportunity to show off their defensive skill. Port goalie Alvaro Orellana, made several impressive saves. This deadlock continued in the second half as well, with both teams coming up just short of goals. Finally with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half, Farmingdale took a shot from the side of the net which went just out of the reach of Orellana and into the goal. Despite the Vikings' intense offensive pressure, they were unable to score and the game ended in a 1-0 Farmingdale victory.
Port played its next game almost a week later on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at home. The number two-ranked Vikings faced off against South Side in this game. Port, despite still being short due to injury, came out on fire and was able to score five goals in the first 20 minutes of the game. Brian Dermody started the scoring getting two back-to-back goals in the opening minutes of the game. Port senior Nat Francis continued the scoring when he faked the goalie and put the ball in the lower left corner of the goal. The next two goals were scored by Port seniors Steven Orloff and Scott Linthicum, each off hard shots from the side of the goal. The Vikings finished the first half with a 5-0 lead.
In the second half, Port coach Roger Winter played each of his goalies, Alvaro Orellana, Tayo Giwa and Alex Mirica, all of whom made several imressive saves. Both teams went scoreless in this half giving Port a big 5-0 victory.
The Vikings play their first playoff game at home on Tuesday, Nov. 2, against number 10 seed Lawrence.
