Betty Jane Hillis died peacefully on Oct. 22, 1999 after a brief illness. The cause of death was a lymphoma surrounding her trachea. Betty was born in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of John and Brita Bratten and was graduated from the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Minnesota. She also attended Columbia University in NYC and the State University of Stony Brook. Betty and her family have lived in Port Washington since 1970, and while living here, she has worked as dental hygienist in the Manhasset offices of Dr. William Bickel and Dr. Bill Shea. Prior to living here she was a dental hygienist in Minnesota and Florida, as well as Newfoundland, Manitoba and the Northwest Territory in Canada. She was particularly proud of her work among the Inuit children in Northern Canada, considering it a rare opportunity to provide them with modern dental care, including flouride treatments. These various work locations were due to her husband's various assignments during his 39-year career with Pan Am. Betty was an avid bridge player, enjoyed walking or hiking and was an enthusiastic world traveler. She was active in the Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran in Manhasset, as well as in her community of Bayview Colony in Port Washington. She was known and loved by all. Betty is survived by her husband of 52 years, James Hillis. Other survivors include her daughter, Andrea Lewis and husband Grady of St. Louis, MO; her son, John Hillis and his wife Cathy and granddaughter Kaitlyn Elizabeth of Medford, NY. Betty was the youngest of four daughters and is survived by her three sisters, Marcella Stevens and Evelyn Twillings of Minneapolis and Swanhild Sheperd of Los Angeles. There were also 10 nieces and nephews with whom she had a wonderful relationship. A memorial service is planned at the Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran on Northern Blvd., Manhasset at 1 p.m. on Nov. 13. The family wishes, in lieu of flowers, that the memorials be a donation to the church, your favorite charity or the Laurie Strauss Leukemia Foundation, PO Box 665, Plandome Station, NY 11030. Nicholas T. Iannucci, 47, died on Oct. 24, 1999. He was the oldest son of Arita and the late Nicholas Iannucci. Nicholas leaves behind his sister Teresa Cosolito (Jimmy); his brother Robert (Helga) and his brothers Stephen and Matthew. He was predeceased by his brother Richard. He was also very special to his niece Kristina and his nephews, James, Michael, Robert and Christopher. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Funeral Mass at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment Calverton National Cemetery.
