Vikings Sr. Jason Ham rushes past 3000 yard mark.
|
Last week's impressive 41-13 win over Bellmore/JFK kept the Vikings hopes alive to make the playoffs. Jason Ham ran for 197 yards on 17 carries (2 touchdowns) and Frank Zaccherio added 104 yards on 11 carries (2 TD's). On defense Zaccherio had 14 tackles and an interception. Spencer Bodner completed two of six passes, ran for 52 yards and scored once. Tight end Ricky Brown scored on a 13 yard pass reception from Bodner.
Port's offensive production (188 pts) is currently second best in Nassau. Two time All-County running back Ham is fourth in scoring with 12 TD's. His 197 yards rushing last week, helped him break his single season rushing record and put him over 3000 yards career rushing. He is the most prolific running back in the school's history. Based on his football credentials, Jason is sure to be considered as one of the leading candidates for this year's Thorp Award. The award is given annually by Newsday to Nassau County's best football player. Only one other Port athlete has ever won this award since its inception in 1942. Port's football legend John Fasano won the Thorp Award in 1946. He was one of the few linemen to ever win the award. In 1971, another Port lineman, Ames Ressa, finished high in the balloting.
The Vikings (4-2) have two games remaining, both against play-off contenders. This week, they travel to Elmont (4-2) for a game in which Port is a slight favorite.
If Port wins, then the season finale against Floral Park (4-2) will be the 'do-or-die' game for both teams. The game will be played at home on Nov. 6, 2:00 p.m. This game is a 'must see' for any Port football fan.
Last week's win over Bellmore/JKF (2-4) was a romp for Port. The Vikings scored in 6 of 9 possessions. In the first quarter QB Bodner scored on a 11 yard keeper. The score was set up by F. Zaccherio after a 40 yard runback of a pass interception. In the second quarter Ham scored on a 1 yard plunge off tackle. After a Bellmore score, Ham returned the ensuing kickoff for an 80 yard TD. At the half Port had a comfortable 20-7 lead. In the third quarter F. Zaccherio plunged for a 4 yard TD after a series of plays that featured a 37 yard pass reception by Ricky Brown from Bodner. Port's next score came early in the fourth quarter after a pass interception by sophomore linebacker Jason Sussman on a 13 yard TD pass from Bodner to Ricky Brown. Port's last TD was by F. Zaccherio on a 28 yard run from scrimmage. Port held Bellmore to 142 yards of total offense. Senior defensive back Jon Ross and sophomore Jason Sussman provided solid defensive efforts along with Zaccherio, Ham, Bodner and Brown.
