Give Me a P..."P", Give Me An O..."O"...............Go Port! (Photo by Lori Zankel)

The 11th Annual Pride in Port celebration hit a lot of homers again as this traditional community event provided attractions for the many people who love Port Washington. Young and old alike partook of the many fun-filled and, at times, emotionally stirring events scheduled for this special day.

As they celebrated their wonderful town, high-spirited townspeople enjoyed a host of activities. The seniors had their luncheon and free-flu shot program. The school children, all bursting with their own school pride, constructed and created some clever floats that demonstrated their artistic abilities. Volunteer groups had their opportunity to express their pride in Port as they too marched down Main Street (George Bergman Blvd. for PIP week) and Port Blvd. The Fire Department and its trucks rolled down the street with horns blowing and lights flashing and were cheered by the crowds as they passed by. Pipe and drum bands roused the parade onlookers with their stirring sound, while Hip Pickles regaled the crowds with its unique sound that have delighted PIP parade watchers for the past several years. And this year's Blue and White Dance for the adults, subtitled "A Taste of Port" because of the many local restarants that provided goodies, had Port people's feet---and taste buds---dancin'.

And, of course, the Schreiber cheerleaders and Portettes, and famous marching band, gave the crowd a preview of the half-time show at the homecoming football game, which started at 2 p.m.

However, as school board member Nancy Cowles noted at the breakfast held for this year's Port Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, the day isn't just about football. It's more about being part of a community and trying one's best to contribute to the richness of the fabric of daily life in Port.
