In response to a request to PWYC for "info" about the club's recent event, "On the Bay" received the following:
"Local Sailors Raise Over $13,000 to Benefit Leukemia Research"
"On Saturday, Oct. 9, dozens of local sailors participated in the 3rd Annual Volvo Leukemia Cup of Long Island Sound, hosted by the Port Washington Yacht Club. The day began with a steady 10-knot breeze from the northwest, which made for an exciting downwind start for the racers. The course took the participants from Execution Rock to Matinecock Point then across the sound to Scotch Caps. From there, the fleet sailed a long upwind leg to Willets Point near the Throgs Neck Bridge. As the wind subsided in the afternoon to about six knots, this last mark extended the race to about four hours on the water.
"Finishes were as follows: Non-Spinnaker division: 1) Time-Out, A. Buhr, 2) Starship Enterprise, E. Schillay, 3) Pat A. Wil, E. Wassmer. Spinnaker division: 1) Avalanche, A. Albrecht, 2) Diane, Schwartz, 3) Happy Daze II, T. Egan. In all 17 yachts participated.
"After the regatta, racers gathered at the Port Washington Yacht Club for live entertainment, barbecue, awards and fund raising. Sailors raised over $13,000 for the Leukemia Society of America."
* This year's dates for MBYC's Fall Series, a major big-boat regatta on Long Island Sound, are Oct. 16-17 and 23-24. On both days of the first weekend, racing had to be canceled for lack of wind. The first year of the event was 1979.
* Meanwhile on Mill Pond on Oct. 23, there was sufficient wind for the Thomson Industries perpetual trophy competition. That trophy was presented in 1983 by Gino Matkovic, Bob Mitchell and Jim Moore (all very well known on the waterfront).
Seven "M Class" Boats (50 inches long and 800 square inches of sail) were raced. Top places: 1st Lech Arciszewski, 2nd Ralph Pappas, 3rd Herman Estevez. All three are members of Mill Pond MYC; Estevez belongs also to Central Park MYC.
The top scorer in this event designs and builds boats. He and the second-place scorer were racing boats of his design. On Sunday he won nine out of ten races and was third in the last one.
* Your reporter looked through the results of the 12 Meter Regatta at Larchmont YC over Oct. 9-10. The only connection she could work out with people known in our area is that Rich du Moulin sailed on Intrepid skippered by J. Curtain of Larchmont.
