The library has received the approval of the New York State Department of Education to proceed with its plans for expansion and renovation. The library filed its plans with the state last March, but was unable to begin the project until the go-ahead was received.
'"Now we can finally move forward," said library director Nancy Curtin. "I want to thank the residents of Port Washington for their patience and understanding. We had no control over when the state would grant us approval. But now that they've given the go-ahead we can reasonably predict just how long the project will take to complete."
According to Curtin, the library, in consultation with Turner Construction and the architectural firm of Donald and Lisa Sclare, is now preparing the various bid specifications for construction and other services. As soon as the bid specifications are completed, they will be advertised and bids received for consideration.
Curtin stated that she expected the actual construction to begin sometime in December, starting with the building exterior. During this time, library service will continue within the building with many programs taking place at the Landmark on Main Street. In March 2000, the library building will close so that the interior renovation can be done. During this period, which is expected to last about six months, library services will be provided at other locations within Port Washington, possibly in trailers located in Manorhaven Park.
We expect the project to be completed in November 2000," said Curtin. "We'll schedule a Grand Opening during the winter and invite everyone to come and see their newly-designed library. I sincerely believe it will have been worth the wait," Curtin added.
