The pleasant temperature and the intensity of the Port Washington football team continue to keep us outdoors on Saturdays. This week we faced our most formidable opponent. New Hyde Park ranked number one in the conference and is a team that made it to the finales last year. New Hyde Park scored first. These were the first points scored against the Vikings in the first half all season, but as good teams do, they responded on a third and 10 option as quarterback Spencer Bodner pitched to Jason Ham who delivered on a 52-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, NHP scored again. The Vikings returned the favor this time as Ham took Bodner's shuttle pass and weaves 53 yards to pay dirt. Before the half, NHP did manage to score again on a 31-yard pass play, leaving the score at halftime 20-12 (the decision was up for grabs).

The Vikings know they can score, but needed to contain NHP. Trailing 27-12 in the third quarter and with the packed stands providing the fulcrum for this team which seems destined to make it to the turf, they stayed within striking distance with a sustained drive. Ham ripped a 20-yard run. Bodner then completed passes of 35 and 10 yards to Ricky Brown, who scored to pull the Vikings within a touchdown. Frank Zaccherio who had a stellar defensive game, caught Bodner's two-point pass. Much to our chagrin that was our last score of the game.

We are only at the midpoint of the regular season and there will be more excitement at this coterie of players continues to establish itself. Port is now tied for second place based upon the power rating system. Next week's opponent is Hewlett. The Vikings seek your support and if you are looking for an exciting afternoon for children of all ages meet us as at Hewlett's football field. Come on down.
