I read with concern the recent letter from Dr. Wesley Berkowitz regarding Longview Road. Regrettably, the letter was replete with inaccurate statements and assumptions which require correction on the record.

First, the town prevailed in the lawsuit that sought to overturn the decision to reopen Longview Road to two-way traffic. Dr. Berkowitz' letter would have the reader believe that the court agreed with his position. It did not.

Second, every member of our town board (those who voted to reopen Longview road and those who voted to keep it one way) are deeply concerned about the safety of motorists and pedestrians, especially children. My vote was based on the reality that "trapping" so much traffic on Beacon Hill Road creates conditions even more dangerous than Dr. Berkowitz alleges exist on Longview Road.

Third, the implication that there was some kind of "back room deal" concerning Longview road, requiring further investigation by your publication, is not only untrue and insulting, but does a disservice to all five town board members, each of whom struggled with this issue for a considerable period of time.

Fourth, Dr. Berkowitz' letter leads the reader to conclude that there are no means to make Longview road safer. This is simply not true. There are other engineering alternatives to enhance safety for children. Sidewalks are an option. Further restrictions on parking should be discussed. Cutting back vegetation that impairs drivers' vision should be considered.

Dr. Berkowitz, just as you would never "play politics" with the safety of children for whom you are responsible as an educator and counselor, I can assure you that neither would I as an elected official.

Doreen E. Banks, Councilwoman

Town of Hempstead
