October 2, 1999 The Port Vikings had their home opener on Saturday and it began with an onslaught of offense. On the first play from scrimmage senior running back Jason Ham scampered through the defense for a 60-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing drive Zacchario took the handoff and trotted 60 yards for a touchdown. On the following drive QB Spencer Bodner added a 1-yard touch down run to make it 21-0 in the first quarter. It looked as if Port was going to dominate this game and that is exactly what they did. The offensive line exploded off the ball allowing Ham, Zaccherio and Bodner to pick apart the defense. At halftime the score was 36-0, but the Vikings knew that they could not let up.

The second half mirrored the first with complete domination by the Vikings. Port tacked on another touchdown and extended their lead to 42. In addition to an explosive offense Port's defense was remarkable. Great Neck South did not cross midfield in the first half and was held to 107 total yards. Port pulled some of its starters in the third quarter allowing everyone to participate in the game. The second team defense did an outstanding job making sure that Great Neck was held scoreless.

At the end of the day Port had 490 yards of total offense. Ham led the charge with 331 yards and 3 touchdowns. Zaccherio had an impressive game as well rushing for 135 yards on 8 carries and 3 touchdowns. On defense Ham recorded 9 tackles, 1 interception and 2 sacks. Behind all of these statistics may be the most impressive one of all; Head Coach Ken Kruescher got his 100th victory.

Port is now 3-0 and looking to keep their winning streak alive. Port success has stemmed from hard work, raw talent and their ability to stick together as a team. The coaches have also done a tremendous job in preparing and motivating the players each week. Their goal has been to take one game at a time and not look too far ahead. All of the players remain focused on the next game as they prepare for their biggest challenge of the year. Undefeated Port will take on top-ranked New Hyde Park in Conference II's game of the week. The game is on Saturday at 2:00 so come out and show your support for the Vikings.
