Saturday September 25, 1999---With an impressive win against Southside the week before Port looked to extend their winning streak against Carey. Port's preseason ranking of sixth placed them as underdogs against the second ranked Carey, but Port believed that the game was going to be theirs from the start.
It would be logical to think that to stop Port Washington from scoring you need to stop All County running backs Jason Ham and Frank Zaccheiro. Carey knew this and stacked the line against Zacchario and put two men on Ham. However, they did not account for quarterback Spencer Bodner who scored three times in the first half on runs on 35, 32 and 38 yards respectively. The Vikings were in control while Carey was befuddled going into halftime down 20-0.
At the inception of the second half the feeling on the Carey sideline was that the game was far from over. Carey mounted a fourth quarter comeback and cut the Vikings lead to 6. The whole momentum of the game had shifted and Port needed a big play to slow Carey down. Enter Spencer Bodner Stage Left. With Carey on Port's 30-yard line and threatening to take the lead, Bodner intercepted a pass from Babero and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown. With the score now 26-14, and the fire refueled in the hearts of the players Port displayed what most teams lack. Killer instinct. On Carey's next drive, LB/RB Jason Ham stripped the ball away from the quarterback and Port recovered it. The Vikings continued to mount their offensive attack as Bodner punched the ball into the endzone from 7 yards out.
Bodner had a career day gaining 156 yards on 10 carries and four touchdowns. He also completed 1 of 3 passes for 32 yards. While Carey tried to slow down Ham, he still managed to have 88 yards on eight carries. Frank Zaccherio recorded 13 tackles to solidify the Port defense.
Port has a formidable offensive attack with Bodner, Ham and Zaccahrio at the helm. If a team tries to slow two of them down the other one will break free. While these players can take control of a game they owe it all to their offensive line who played great the entire game. These guys hung together the opened huge holes for the offense, but more importantly enabled Port to extend their record to (2-0). This week the Vikings play their first home game and take on Great Neck South. The game is on Saturday at 2:00 so come out and show your support for the Vikings.
