Having thoroughly enjoyed Manhasset Bay Estates Association events on June 4 and July 18, your reporter's thoughts have been dwelling on the Southern end of the bay. The kayaking activities of George and Marianne Vescey came to mind.
A chat with George led to an encouraging report of a "voyage" on the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 4. Around 5 p.m.: high tide, a slight southeast breeze and temperature into the 80's; the water smelled "so good," like "Manhasset Bay wanted to smell."
The first leg was into the wind, south into the bay to where one can see the trestle, with Great Neck on one side and the beginning of Manhasset on the other. Ducks and geese were about.
Coming back was along Leeds Pond, up to the rushes with the breeze basically behind.
George noticed a boat raised on pontoons; the outboard was up high. (Such a boat was noted during the Blessing of the Fleet in June.) Also, nice sailboats were out.
Finally, George said some very nice things about kayaks: They are easy to get into. No preparation is involved. The physical feeling of being on the water is "quick and cheap"; it's refreshing.
Yes, the Vesceys wear life jackets.
* At the MBYC race-committee party on Aug. 7, the major topic of conversation was the broaching of Claude Mapes' Manhasset Bay One-Design (23 Skiddoo). This was in large part because recovery and rehabilitation were so impressive. Highlights: After crossing the finish line in a wind blowing up to 18-20 knots and after a third attempt to pick up the mooring, the boat got entangled with a Sonar "moored next door." The MBO boom was tangled under the Sonar shrouds. The boat rolled over and the cockpit filled. Claude and crew Bill Cornachio hung on until a club launch rescued them. Another launch with Chip Whipple aboard came along and freed the Sonar. The MBO was towed by the launch to the beach north of the dock. An alert dock attendant hauled the boat by travel lift. Also to be mentioned are a crew of young people who with buckets emptied the boat and sponged it out. The young team included: Adam Brackin, Alex Horowitz, Mark Cornachio, Matt Cornachio and Brian Hardy.
* Four of our bay's Juniors competed in the Laser division of Larchmont Race Week and four in the Laser Radial division. Outstanding is Jason Hill in second place in Laser-Yellow (19 boats). Next best is Doug Morea in seventh place in Laser-Blue (22 boats).
Of 18 entries in the Sonar Atlantic Coast Championship (8/7-8 Larchmont) J. Jordan/G. Knapp of MBYC placed first, Stephen Cucchiaro, EYC, second and Greg/Beth Danilek, MBYC, third.
