  • NEWS: What Does a Failed School Budget Mean?

    At a post-election budget meeting held on May 20, two days after the school district's operating budget for 1999-2000 was defeated by the voters, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Al Inserra informed the audience on what a failed budget means in terms of operating the schools for the upcoming year. The majority of people who attended the meeting and spoke were taxpayers who voted yes on the budget. (Most pro-budget statements were applauded.) Despite the short notice, the meeting was well-attended, and the audience filled the auditorium at Weber to about 3/4ths of its capacity. FULL STORY

  • NEWS: Post-Mortem on School Budget Failure

    Last week's defeat of the school district's operating budget in a vote of 1890 to 1543 elicited an array of responses from residents. These ranged in everything from "I'm moving" to peals of joy from some people present at the polling place when Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Business Larry Blake announced that the budget had failed. The results are especially significant because Port was only one of three districts in the 126 districts on Long Island that had its budget fail. Moreover, the budgets from other districts included some of the highest spending in decades and were passing at record rates, according to an article in Newsday. FULL STORY

With a 14 and 2 record having earned them the sixth best ranking in New York State, the Vikes will be a team to beat.
