League of Women Voters Presents School Board Candidates
The public had the opportunity to hear and question School Board candidates Robert Scheer, Richard Sussman, and Robert Ferro on the evening of April 28 at Weber Middle School. Candidates Night, presented by the League of Women Voters, included two candidates who are seeking second terms -- Bob Scheer, the current School Board President, and Richard Sussman; Robert Ferro is seeking his first term. The fourth candidate, John Zimmerman, was traveling abroad and thus unable to be present. However, the Port News had a phone interview with Mr. Zimmerman and included his responses to the questions asked at the debate. Two positions are available for the School Board.

Alternate School Facilities Plan on the Table
In response to community feedback, the board of education revisited alternate long range facilities plans that did not include building a new middle school. As a result, board consensus appears to be forming on a new conceptual facilities plan that uses Sousa as the middle school, and Manorhaven, Guggenheim, Daly, Weber and Salem as the elementary schools.
