BOE Presents Tentative Long Range Facilities Plan to Community
After 33 work sessions during the period from September 1997 to the present, countless meetings with officials from each building, parents and community groups, the plane has finally landed for the school district's long-range facilities plan. At a public forum on March 16, the board of education made its presentation of the conceptual plan that's being contemplated. With an estimated price tag of $74 million, many residents are reeling from "sticker shock." However, the board and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Al Inserra tried to explain the large sum to the taxpayers, who expressed many concerns and opinions, and asked many questions.

Les Read and John Weaver have sat two feet away from each other at Village of Baxter Estate board of trustee meetings since 1977. Now Mr. Weaver, a trustee for 22 years, has edged out his fellow board member, Mr. Read who has been mayor since l983, by four votes.

On The Bay
On Sunday, March 21, 80 hearty sailors and their crew approached the race course in Manhasset Bay only to be told to return to the dock before the start of the first race, because of high winds that were "fluky" and "all over the place." Once wind conditions improved, the race committee set a no jibe course, and eight sailors and crew completed five races in 10-14 knot winds, with gusts to 21-23 knots.
