  • NEWS: Police Commissioner Candidates Trade Punches at Debate

    Amid several requests to follow the proscribed format that speakers can only ask questions---not state opinions, several calls to order, and one recess due to a speaker who refused to stop speaking after repeatedly being told he was out of order, League of Women Voters member Joyce Fieldsteel moderated the annual Special District's Candidates Debate. This year, the only contested election is for police commissioner. It is between incumbent Roy Smitheimer and challenger Sal Zimbardi. FULL STORY

  • NEWS: BOE Hires Environmental Experts to Study Salem

    At its Nov. 17 meeting, the board of education approved the hiring of an environmental consulting firm to help them and the community assess the possibility of using the Salem Instructional Center as an elementary school. The close proximity of the facility to the Port Washington Landfill has raised potential environmental issues that would have to be adequately addressed before the school would be reopened. The school was closed in 1988 and currently houses school district offices and maintenanc shops. FULL STORY

    On Sunday, Nov. 29, 13 frostbite dinghy sailors and their crew enjoyed a full day of racing in brilliant sunshine and shifting, light wind. Five races and one crew race were completed. Top sailors: 1. Pedro Lorson/Mimi Berry (536). 2. Ralf Steitz/Felicity Ryan (537), and 3. Steve Moore/Jerry Morea (510). Amelia Amon won the crew race. FULL STORY
