We know that World War I did not pass Cow Neck by. The microfilm copies of the local newspapers on file at the Port Washington Public Library show dozens of articles about the Home Guard, men in service, the Red Cross, women's support groups, home defense plans, Liberty Bond rallies and the like. However, a diligent search of the archives of both the Library and the Historical Society turned up little in the form of letters, photographs and other memorabilia. We like to believe that there are treasure troves of information sitting in Port Washington's attics and old trunks.
If you have such family records, please consider donating them to the Historical Society or the Library for the benefit of writers and scholars and future generations. Or if you don't want to part with them, let the institutions make copies. Please call the curator at the Historical Society---365-9074 or Janet West at the Port Washington Public Library---883-4400.
Thanks for your cooperation!
