Port Washington 1 Rockville Centre 0
On Saturday, July 18, Port Washington 11- and 12-year-olds played their first game in the East Meadow Baseball Tournament. Michael Kaufmann and Zack Lipkins combined to pitch a three-hit shutout. The damage to Rockville Centre was done early in the second inning as Brian Moran led off with a walk and stole second. Mike Kaufmann then drove Moran home with a line drive double. Thanks to outstanding defensive plays by James Reuter, John Masiello, Anthony Matinale and RJ Voelker, that was all Port needed to defeat Rockville Centre, 1-0.
Port Washington 2 New Hyde Park 0
Later on, under the lights at Manorhaven Park, Jake Sussman pitched a one-hit complete game shutout against a very tough New Hyde Park team. In this pitcher's duel, Port was held at bay until the fifth inning when Zack Lipkins drew a walk and Sussman bunted him over to second. Brian Moran and Mike Kaufmann both walked to load up the bases. Then Mike Riley fouled off several pitches to draw an RBI walk and Moran stole home for the second run. The key defensive play of the game was in the fifth inning when New Hyde Park had runners on second and third with one out. Zack Lipkins fielded a hard ground ball at third, checked the runners and threw to Mike Riley at first for the out. Riley then threw to David Verni at home to tag the runner trying to score for the second out of the double play! Matt Geiger, playing shortstop with his lightning fast reflexes did not let any ball get by him. Mike Ajello and Mike Goodwin made other key defensive plays that helped Port beat New Hyde Park, 2-0.
