Whetting the appetites of thousands of golf enthusiasts, the North Hempstead Town Board has set down the first policies, fees and reservation rules for the hotly anticipated opening season of the Harbor Links golf complex. In a unanimous decision this week, the board has established a "tee time membership" system which will allow town residents to reserve specific tee-off times as many as six days in advance.

The new complex, set within 400 acres of newly-dedicated parkland across West Shore Road from Hempstead Harbor, is on track for an early July opening. In addition to the 18-hole links course, there will be a nine-hole executive course and a full driving range. Eventually, a miniature golf course will be opened, and construction is already underway on at least four multipurpose athletic fields. Senior Tour Players Development, Inc., the nationally-noted Boston-based firm will manage the facility's day-to-day operations.

Tee Time membership cards will be available to residents at $35 for 1998 (July through December), $50 for the full 1999 year, or at a special two-year discount for only $75. Non-residents will be able to purchase a Tee Time membership for twice the resident rate. The Tee Time membership will be needed to reserve tee times on the main 18-hole course. Resident Tee Time members will be able to reserve play times six days in advance, non-resident members will be able to reserve five days in advance, and non-members will be able to reserve remaining times, if any, up to three days in advance. Specific reservations will not be necessary for the nine-hole executive course.

The basic fee structures for the golf complex are set as follows:
Resident weekday $37
Resident weekend $41
Non-resident weekday $60
Non-resident weekend $75
Senior resident weekday $25
Junior $15
Twilight resident $25
Twilight non-resident $35
Weekend twilight resident $25
Weekend twilight non-resident $45
Executive-style Nine Hole Course
Resident weekday $15
Resident weekend $18
Non-resident weekday $18
Non-resident weekend $24
Senior resident weekend $14
Junior $10
Driving Range
Small bucket (30 balls) $3
Large bucket (60 balls) $6
Jumbo bucket (90 balls) $9

Golf carts, mandatory on weekends, will be available for $15 per person. Weekend rates will be in effect on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Consistent with policy at other town parks, senior rates are available for those aged 60 and above. Juniors are those aged 16 and below, and can make reservations at the junior rate 24 hours in advance.

Information packets describing outing packages and other policies are available by calling a special temporary dedicated telephone number for all golf course inquiries at 869-7603 (a permanent number will be announced soon). The hundreds of residents who have already called or written to Town Hall, including those who have already received the preliminary information packet and map, will automatically receive this updated information and future updates. Harbor Links information and photographs are also available at the Town of North Hempstead internet website.
