No Frostbiting last weekend (March 22).

The Safety-at-Sea Seminar at the US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) will be conducted this Saturday (3/28). For further info, call the academy: 773-5000.

Probably many readers of "On The Bay" have already read The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger, or have read reviews of it. At MBYC on 3/18, the presentation by Carl Schwarz, using a large map, preceded spellbinding accounts by members of the Coast Guard or National Guard Air-Sea Rescue who were actually "there."

Five of the nine people aboard John Thomson's Solution (Farr 40) for the Southern Ocean Racing Conference (Feb. 25-March 1) were from Port Washington. Besides John (skipper) were John III, Gary Knapp, Ralph Steitz and Stretch Ryder. They not only won their division but also the overall Gold Cup for Boat of the Week (160 in all). It was very exciting because they won their division by 1/4 point. Tom Stark of KYC scored third in the Corel 45 class.

In two previous races, Farr 40 Gold Cup in Fort Lauderdale (Nov. 19-23) and Key West Race Week (Jan. 18-23), Solution had won her division.

Gerhard and Rosemary Weber are members of the MBOD fleet. Last month they enjoyed a three-week "summer" vacation in New Zealand (her homeland) and a four-day cruise to the Fiji Islands.

While they were with the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Gerhard (in an emergency) helped to start a race. They had met Russell Koutts here in 1996 when he won the Knickerbocker Cup. He is the last winner of America's Cup.
