Over 60…And Getting Younger: January 29, 2010

Tidbits

About 10 years ago, I wrote a column concerning “Where does the lost love go?” in a bitter divorce. The couple was enthralled with each other when they said, “I do.” They vowed love and kisses forever when they stood before the minister or rabbi.

When the end of the marriage is close and the lawyers take over, where has the affection gone to?

This thought popped into my mind again as the rabid Jets fans were interviewed in bars and saloons all over New York City and New Jersey. After the Jets lost, where did all that enthusiasm go? The shouts of J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets no longer leap out of the radio and TV sets.

As a former Brooklyn Dodger fan, I remember how we handled the yearly disappointments when we lost every year to the NY Yankees. Our motto always was, “Wait till next year!” It was always most unsatisfying.

Our Jets gave us thrills and chills this year with a young quarterback and an even-tempered coach and great rookie players. Let us all remember the good times and say loudly, “Wait till next year!”

The American Recession

How did I, a retired person, really know that the federal and state governments were in trouble? In the past, when I sent my check to the IRS or the New York State Financial Authorities, it took two or three weeks before they cashed my check.

This year, the money was withdrawn two or three days after they received my payment. Are they so in need of money that they cash my check while the ink is barely dry? Are they in such bad shape?

Haiti Cherie!

The Haitian earthquake is very disturbing. This tiny, impoverished nation has been dealt a horrible blow. Our hemisphere has been called on to help and rescue the survivors. The U.S.A. has sent money, troops and food and water to Haiti. Israel established a modern, sophisticated hospital in the field to prevent a further disaster. Some very oil-rich nations have not raised a finger or sent financial aid. We are all on this planet Earth together. Let us all help our neighbors.
