Town Of Oyster Bay Passes 2013 Budget

3.8 percent property tax increase

The Town of Oyster Bay Town Board unanimously approved the town’s $265 million budget for 2013 on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The budget includes a 3.8 percent property tax-levy increase, within the state-mandated cap.

The 2013 budget includes raises for town employees, as per labor contracts, however the budget may be adjusted yet; talks between Supervisor John Venditto and Robert Rauff Jr., president of Civil Service Employees Association Local 881, were suspended by Hurricane Sandy and subsequent storm recovery efforts. The union may be willing to trade a contract extension and a no-layoff clause in exchange for the relinquishment of salary increases, but a new meeting to discuss this has yet to be scheduled.

CSEA Local 881 members comprise more than 90 percent of the town’s approximately 1,200 employees. If no agreement is reached, the union is concerned that 200 members could be laid off to cut costs.
