Tapestry Artist

Tapestry art work by Sherry Schreiber will be exhibited in the Jericho Public Library’s art gallery through Dec. 28. Reception: Dec. 14, 2-4 p.m.; open to the public. Tapestry weaving is like translating from one language to another. In order to make this transition from her source of inspiration, a pastel drawing is executed first. A synthesis occurs during this preliminary step. Then the outlines are rendered onto graph paper. The entire piece is not visible all at once, as the woven part rolled onto weft beam of the loom. “One could say that my tapestries are paintings done in yarn, though I believe that they are experienced in a more alive and luminous form than painting,” says Schreiber. The library is located at 1 Merry Ln. in Jericho.

Trees of Love Lighting Ceremony

The Last Hope Animal Rescue continues a holiday tradition it began in 1998 with the Trees of Love Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 14 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Last Hope Adoption Center, 3300 Beltagh Ave. in Wantagh. Prior to the lighting of two decorated trees, participants can purchase ribbons for $10 each. Gold ribbons honor living pets and red ribbons memoralize late pets. Pets’ names are written on the ribbons and will be placed on the trees. A third tree is decorated in green ribbons only, but these are to remember the countless discarded pets throughout the country euthanized each year at overcrowded shelters. Supporters can also purchase these symbolic ribbons. All “Trees of Love” proceeds benefit Last Hope’s rescued dogs and cats plus our community outreach programs such as Fix-A-Feral. For more information, or for a form to purchase ribbons in advance, visit Refreshments will be served after the illumination ceremony.
