Bethpage Lax Star Makes Defense Count

Stifling an opponent’s offensive output is task that Bethpage resident Melissa Rohr has down to a science.

The LIU Post lacrosse player recently earned Co-Defenseive Player of the Year honors, a major award from the East Coast Conference. Rohr was joined by teammates Jackie Sileo, of Wantagh, who won ECC Player of the Year; and Katie Hannan, of Gansevoort, N.Y., who won Goalkeeper of the Year.

Rohr wins a piece of the conference’s top defensive award after anchoring the second best scoring defense (5.44 goals allowed per game) in Division II. The senior defender is second on the Pioneers with 27 ground balls and caused four turnovers on the season.

Sileo wrapped up one of the most decorated all-time women’s lacrosse careers in NCAA all-division history with another superb season in 2014. In 16 games on the season, Sileo has posted a total of 127 points on 47 goals and 80 assists. Her point, assist, and assists per game (5.0) totals all currently lead Division II. She also continued to stamp her name in the NCAA record books this season. After becoming Division II’s all-time leading scorer as a junior, Sileo became the NCAA’s all-time all-division leading scorer with an eight point performance in a win over Dowling on April 2.

Hannan takes home the Goalkeeper of the Year in her first and only season starting for the Pioneers after posting a perfect 16-0 record between the pipes. Hannan leads the conference in goals against average (5.37), goals against (73), and save percentage (.549) after tallying 89 saves on the season. Her save percentage is also the top mark in Division II, while her goals against average ranks third.

LIU Post’s Meghan McNamara has been voted the Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year by her peers. Under McNamara’s guidance, the Pioneers finished with an unblemished 16-0 record and spent every week but one ranked as the top team in Division II in the IWLCA poll. The two-time defending National Champions also won the ECC Regular Season Championship to earn the top seed in the upcoming ECC Women’s Lacrosse Championship.

News

Thanks in large part to a substantial increase in sponsor support – and Mother Nature’s cooperation – the 2014 Plainview-Old Bethpage Craft and Gift Fair was a rousing success.

A caravan of vendors filled the parking lot of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library starting at 7 a.m. By the time fairgoers crossed the blue and green balloon arch at 10 a.m. to receive their free T-shirt and bags stuffed with sponsor goodies, there were 108 booths ready to welcome them on the sunny day.

A special series of medical lectures will be held throughout the country in October. The Plainview Hospital is one of the stops on the tour.

On Sunday, Oct. 19 from 7-9 p.m., a free lecture will be presented by Franz Gringinger, MD, Austria and A.W. Arends, MD, Germany. These specialists are members of the Medical Scientific Group (MWF), a part of the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends.

Dr. Gringinger earned his degree at the University of Vienna in 1987 and from the beginning of his medical career, was interested in alternative methods.
