A local hidden cultural gem, the Slobodkina Foundation is hosting a series of engaging programs for senior citizens at its mini-museum in Glen Head and at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington. The events coincide with a major traveling exhibition showcasing Esphyr Slobodkina, a pioneer of American abstract art and author of the classic children's book Caps for Sale. I encourage residents to visit and enjoy these informative and inspirational programs.

The Slobodkina for Seniors Tour & Talk provides an intimate look at the art and life of Ms. Slobodkina, including her escape from Russia, immigration to the United States, founding role in the influential American Abstract Artists group, friendship with children's book author Margaret Wise Brown and rise from poverty to international recognition. Ms. Slobodkina kept busy as she grew older, creating and exhibiting some of her finest artwork and editing a 1,100-page autobiography during her 80s and 90s. In fact, at age 80, she oversaw the construction of a children's reading room at the University of Harford and at the age of 90 purchased and renovated a new home. Ms. Slobodkina's energy, spirit and unwavering work ethic have served as an inspiration to the hundreds of seniors who have visited the Slobodkina House and Studio over the past 10 years.

The Slobodkina for Seniors Tour & Talk at the Heckscher Museum of Art includes a guided tour of the national exhibition Rediscovering Slobodkina: A Pioneer of American Abstraction on view at the Heckscher through March 22.

The Slobodkina for Seniors Tour & Talk at the Slobodkina House and Museum in Glen Head includes a guided tour of the artist's former home, now the Slobodkina House and Museum, where more than 100 works of art, original dress designs and antique jewelry are on view.

Senior organizations can book tours by calling the Slobodkina Foundation at 674-0776.
