Sandi Ellen Vanderpool, a resident of Plainview and a teacher in the Plainview-Old Bethpage, John F. Kennedy High School was honored as the Health Education Teacher of the Year by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYS AHPERD), a statewide, not-for-profit membership service organization whose membership consists of K-16 professionals and future professionals.

The Health Education Teacher of the Year Award recognizes Vanderpool's commitment to quality Health Education and her dedication to her students. She utilizes various teaching styles and designs innovative learning experiences to meet each students needs. One of her daily goals is to encourage her students to participate in significant discussion and debate to examine current health issues. She is the advisor to several extra-curricular programs and is a tireless advocate for her students and her program.
Vanderpoolwas the recipient of the National PTA Founder's Day Award and she received the Memorial Day Community Service Award.
The 2008 award was presented at the Association's 71st annual Conference held at the Turning Stone Resort and Conference Center.
