Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced Monday that a grand jury has returned an indictment charging four Queens men with felony reckless endangerment charges after the group was arrested Oct. 1 following a six-car, 100mph race on the Long Island Expressway in Plainview.
The group was initially spotted racing by police officers in the westbound lanes of the LIE, near the Nassau-Suffolk border at exit 48. After attempting to elude police officers during a brief chase, four of the six drivers were apprehended on the LIE near exit 37 in Roslyn. Each of the four men was arrested and charged with misdemeanor reckless endangerment and various traffic and equipment violations that carried a penalty of no more than a year in jail.
Anil Isaac, 22, of Richmond Hill, Rajesh Prashaud, 21, of South Ozone Park, and brothers Ziad, 21, and Riad Mohamed, 19, of South Ozone Park, have each been indicted on charges of Reckless Endangerment in the First (felony) and Second Degree and Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer in the Third Degree, as well as numerous traffic and equipment violations. Each member of the group now faces a maximum of seven years in prison if convicted of the charges.
Rice said that in addition to traveling at a high rate of speed, Nassau County Police Department Highway Patrol Officers observed the defendants weaving in and out of lanes and creating a dangerous situation for other motorists. The vehicles involved in the race included a 2006 Mazda, 2004 Nissan, a 2004 Infiniti and a 2001 BMW with a license plate that read "HEYOFFCR."
"These charges were upgraded because these four men created an extremely dangerous situation that we are all fortunate did not cost someone their life," Rice said. "Driving like this on the Long Island Expressway is essentially vehicular Russian roulette. When you drive like this, at some point someone is going to get killed, and it's usually an innocent driver just going to work or out to dinner."
The defendants remain free on bail. They are due back in court Jan. 16.
Assistant District Attorney Brian Murphy of the DA's County Court Trial Bureau is handling the case for the District Attorney's Office. Ziad and Riad Mohamed are represented by James Kousouros, Esq. Anil Isaac is represented by Edward Gallison, Esq. Rajesh Prashaud is represented by Anthony Martone, Esq.
The charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
