The Arson Bomb Squad reports the details of a fatal fire that occurred on Wednesday, July 9 at 10:17 a.m. in Plainview.

According to detectives, 2nd Precinct police officers responded to a house on Winters Court for a house fire. Upon arrival, they observed the premise fully engulfed with fire. Fire departments from Plainview, Syosset, Hicksville and Bethpage responded and extinguished the fire with the assistance of 15 trucks and 50 firemen. A 72-year-old deceased male victim was discovered in a rear bedroom. His identity is pending notification from the Nassau County Medical Examiners Office. The fire is deemed non-suspicious and the investigation is continuing.

According to the Plainview Fire Department, firefighters arrived on the scene within 4 minutes of the call and found several neighbors assisting. One was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and one was treated at the scene.

This incident was initially under command of Captain Baron then Chief Tousey. It was brought under control in about an hour. Preliminary investigations point to an electrical problem in a rear room of the structure where the victim was found. The fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal's office and the Nassau County Police Department; however, it is not considered to be suspicious at this time.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross in Nassau County provided assistance to the victim's wife, who was not home during the blaze.

Besides funds for food, clothing, and medications, trained Red Cross volunteers--including a mental health professional--provided the understandably distraught woman with emotional support. Though offered temporary shelter, the woman opted to stay with family and friends.

Additionally, the Red Cross volunteers provided firefighters and law enforcement from multiple departments, with water and snacks as they worked to contain the blaze and then performed their investigation.

All Red Cross disaster assistance is provided at no cost to those affected. In the past 12 months, the Nassau Red Cross has responded to 140 local emergencies--mainly home fires--and has provided nearly $160,000 in relief to 690 Nassau residents.

The American Red Cross in Nassau County is only able to perform its services due to the generosity of individuals who donate their time or money to the nonprofit agency. To learn how you can help, visit the local chapter at 195 Willis Avenue in Mineola or online at www.nassauredcross.org.
