Opinion

The double-DWI accident that seriously injured a police officer might never have happened if our state legislators, DMV, district attorneys, judges, prison and parole officials and police departments all treated drunk (and other dangerous) driving and driving with a suspended license as the serious, life-and-death crimes that they are. This would entail strict 365-day enforcement of all current traffic safety laws, including any speeding above 55 mph, until truly tough laws, including prohibitively expensive fines, more frequent and longer prison sentences, were finally enacted.
