Opinion

In August 2007 our community was stunned with the sudden, untimely death of Amy Cooper, a dear friend and Plainview resident, mother of two children (son age 15, and daughter age 10), and wife to Lloyd Cooper. The other POB soccer coaches in the girls U-11 soccer age group, along with the Plainview Old Bethpage Soccer Club, have decided to hold an event to honor Amy's memory, and raise money on her behalf, with funds benefiting the Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center in Plainview (JCC).

On Sunday, March 9, there will be a community soccer tournament to honor Amy's memory. Proceeds of the tournament will benefit the Amy Cooper Memorial Fund at the JCC, which was an important component of Amy's life and continues to be an integral part of the Cooper family. The Fund grants scholarships to enable those less fortunate to experience various vital life-enhancing programs and services, as well as provide needed equipment and supplies for both the Teen and Swim Centers at the JCC.

Amy and Lloyd have been JCC members for nearly 12 years, and Amy was a JCC member as a child, participating in various teen programs. Both of their children, Alyssa, 10, and Matt, 15, attended preschool programs as well as after-school care. Most recently, Matthew participated in the Maccabi Games in California, representing the JCC roller hockey team and he participates in the JCC Ylanders hockey program as well. Lloyd has volunteered his time for many years as a coach for Matt's teams in the younger age hockey leagues. Alyssa has been a competitive swimmer on the JCC Village Agency Dolphins swim team for the past two years. Alyssa has been playing soccer in the POB Soccer program for over six years, and is a member of the Girls U-11 Xrossfire travel team. Lloyd has volunteered his time for many years as a coach, and is presently one of the coaches of the team.

In order for this event to be a success, we are counting on local businesses and corporations to (either) become sponsor of the event (or donate gift items or gift certificates for a raffle prize). We are writing to ask for your participation, and hope you will consider a sponsorship. We are certain your donation will not only add excitement, but more importantly, help us raise the funds necessary to continue providing vital programs and services to all those who depend on the JCC. Any donations should be made payable to Mid-Island Y JCC, referencing the Amy Cooper Memorial Fund.

On behalf of the Cooper family, and all those you are helping in our community, your support is greatly appreciated. We will, of course, recognize your generosity on our printed materials.
