The Homicide Squad reports the details of a fatal automobile accident that occurred in Woodbury early Saturday morning, Jan 19.

According to police, at approximately 1:50 a.m., Brian Assa of Plainview, was operating a 1991 Jetta Volkswagon northbound on Woodbury Road at a high rate of speed. His passenger, David Darvas, also of Plainview, was in the front passenger seat. As the vehicle approached the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway overpass, the driver lost control, drifted across the southbound lanes of Woodbury Road, mounted the sidewalk and struck the overpass wall. The vehicle continued sideways along the overpass wall, struck a LIPA utility pole and then a tree.

Both vehicle occupants were wearing seat belts and were extricated from the wreck by officers for the Emergency Services Unit. Assa was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. Darvas was transported by Police Ambulance to the Nassau University Medical Center where he was admitted in critical condition.

The vehicle was removed from the scene and impounded for safety checks. Detectives request the public's assistance in that anyone who may have witnessed this accident to please contact the Nassau County Police Crime Stoppers Section at1-800-244-TIPS.
