With 142 registrants that included 25 members of the "Class of 1947," 51 runners completing more than a marathon, and 136 runners completing at least one 2.07 mile loop of the Sunken Meadow State Park course, the Greater Long Island Running Club's eighth annual 6 Hour 60th Birthday Run on October 14 broke all sorts of records for participation. Perfect weather conditions helped new race directors Myron Bellovin and Fred von der Heydt put on a perfect day that attracted a strong contingent of serious ultra athletes, happy 60-year-olds, runners using the venue as a training run for the NYC Marathon or Philadelphia Marathon, and several folks who just wanted to run a few loops and hang out. Everyone was welcome and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Phil Roth
|
Plainview speedster Phil Roth was one of the members of the Class of 1947 who was honored in this year's Run, and Phil returned the favor by running a strong 26.91 miles during the six hours. Phil has been a stalwart at the shorter distances for many years, and this was his first attempt at going beyond the marathon distance.
Another great race, another great post-race party (with some extra flairs provided by Dr. Mary Trotto) and a great day for the local ultra scene. Class of 1948 - get ready for your turn next October.
