Some view the library as merely a place to borrow books and DVDs and others realize that the Plainview Old Bethpage Public library is more of a community hub offering programs, meeting rooms, activities for newborns to seniors in addition to an expansive collection of books and videos.
In May 2005, many residents attended the grand opening of the newly expanded library and enjoyed the 237-seat auditorium, which houses many events in Plainview.
"The auditorium is so well used," said Gretchen Browne, director of the Plainview Old Bethpage Library. "We have piano concerts, blues concerts and dramatic renditions. It is great."
The summer is a great time to get kids involved in the various programs at the library, and the library did have a record number of registrants this summer. Activities continue year-round and offer something for everyone.
One recently scheduled program for children and teens is an appearance by popular children's author Gail Carson Levine, courtesy of Cablevision and Disney on August 21 from 4 - 6 p.m. Free autographed books will be distributed. Call the library to reserve a space for this exciting program.
The library and the Mid Island Y JCC have recently partnered to hold a book club that meets monthly. Everyone has an opportunity to read the books and get together to discuss them.
"This library is a community gathering place for people to come and talk about books and programs and to be entertained," said Browne.
Many different clubs and organizations use the library as their meeting place and some individual book clubs also use the library to meet.
"You name it and we do it at the library," said Browne.
