Opinion

Much to my surprise, my column of November 2006 on business openings and closings in the Hicksville-Jericho area, received a lot of comment from my loyal readers. It seems the local gentry is interested and takes serious note of the comings and goings of the local businesses in our area.

I have chosen three openings in this neighborhood, along with commentary on the previous owners who were replaced.

Genji is a famous Samurai family last name.

Genji is a Japanese restaurant on Jericho Turnpike across from Home Depot and Wendy's. It is a huge restaurant with large catering facilities and it features karaoke every Wednesday and Thursday evening. The menu has traditional Japanese dishes served on interesting plates with immaculate care. The owner, Steven Lee, is of Japanese-Korean heritage, and his family were famous restaurateurs in Japan. It is a fine spot to enjoy this popular cuisine. Japanese beers are available, along with classic American drinks. The dècor is soothing and tastefully accomplished.

The Gengi restaurant has replaced Brindisi's which was a fine Italian restaurant. In addition to traditional seating there are Hibachi tables and Sushi seating. Everything is served carefully.

Shrimp tempura and beef teriyaki are two of my favorites. They are done very nicely.

Gabby's Gourmet has replaced Herr's Delicatessen. Gabby's features chopped salad, wraps, baked goods and, of course, bagels. They advertise "Buy 1 Get 1 Free." Personally, I love their dietetic baked apples, pizza bagels and ruggelach.

The food is displayed well and appears fresh and wholesome. "Stop here for a bagel and a schmeer."

Chase Bank has replaced Bank of New York on Jericho Turnpike. It is more convenient to Chase customers who previously had to go to Broadway or Glen Cove Road. Bankers' hours are now 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This affords customers more time to handle money matters.

Happy Banking!

If any readers wish to inform me of any more new local businesses, I would be happy to include them in another article.

I hope to see you there!
