Opinion

From my Over 60...and Getting Younger viewpoint, I see vast differences between my generation (1950s-1960s-1970s) and the present generation (1990s to the present).

This became crystal clear when I watched my young grandchild, Lewis (born in 2005). I was amazed to see my son changing diapers, getting up in the middle of the night to feed the baby and accomplishing so many helpful tasks that took the pressure off his wife. Bathing the baby and feeding Lewis are some more of his helpful deeds.

I was flabbergasted!

Was this what the world is coming to?

I remember being the wage earner and working very hard. Working hard at the office gave me a built-in excuse to do nothing around the house. I did not pick up a phone in the evening. I had picked up enough phones during the day. I just plopped down in front of the TV with the remote held firmly in my right hand.

While I was recuperating from my work, my wife did all the chores for the children. I was too pooped to help and more or less, I was excused. Earning a living was "Everything" in those days. Succeeding at one's job was paramount. All else took second place.

I have spoken to many of my colleagues and friends of my generation and they feel that they missed too much because they were job- and success-oriented. To put it succinctly, "they were too busy to see the beauties of their kids' lives growing up." It is with remorse and shame that they missed these wonderful years.

As I observe the young men of this generation, I see a greater commitment to their wives and children. The husband/wife team operates more on a 50-50 basis than we did years ago. I admire the way the world has changed. It is truly for the better.

Women as solid wage-earners have a lot to do with it. After a hard day's work, the wife is entitled to the helping hand from her husband.

I enjoy watching this change in our society!
