Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School recently celebrated the 35th anniversary of its student-run radio station, WPOB 88.5 FM. WPOB is one of only four high school stations broadcasting on Long Island, and only about 200 nationwide. The station was built in 1972 with the help of district computer person Jan Schatzberg.

The celebration day culminated a weeklong WPOB awareness program, during which the station held various contests and promotions. A "Name That Tune" game during the morning announcements rallied both faculty and students in a music appreciation modality never before experienced in POBJFK history.
The anniversary celebration featured noted guest speakers as well as raffles and a student produced tribute video. Both the Name That Tune contest and the student video were a result of brainstorming between WPOB advisor and English department head Ms. Fox, and Assistant Principal Glen Zakian.
Student officers and several POBJFK alumni spoke at the assembly, including Doug Lebowitz of Clear Channel Entertainment, musician Gilad Paz, and WOR intern Corey Malter and station managers Sam Katz and Ben Silverberg.
All the radio students and alumni were treated to a catered lunch, set up by the station's secretary Ms. Janice Shaffer.
