Nassau County Homicide Squad detectives are seeking the public's help in finding the driver in a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred in Plainview on Friday, March 30 around 8 p.m. The accident claimed the life of 77-year-old Plainview resident Gurcharan Singh, a religious scholar and spiritual leader within the Sikh community on Long Island.
Detectives report that a 1984 to 1992 red or maroon Lincoln MK V11 operated by an unknown suspect traveling westbound on Old Country Road, passed through a red traffic signal light and struck Singh, as he was attempting to cross from the northwest corner of Old Country Road and Lester Place to the south side.
A Nassau County Police helicopter transported Singh to Nassau University Medical Center where staff physician, Dr. Gaspargan, pronounced him dead at 11:16 p.m.
Detectives ask anyone with information regarding this tragic crime to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-(800) 244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for this crime.
At press time, the Herald has learned that police have arrrested Joseph Kohler, 76, of Plainview in regard to this incident. He has been charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident With a Fatality and is being arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead.
