Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School is pleased to announce that seniors Lesley Slade, Radha Parameswaran, Benjamin Wienert and Adam Borowski have been selected to compete in the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium's Long Island regional competition at Adelphi University on Friday, March 2, 2007.
The four JFK seniors have demonstrated outstanding research projects in the sciences. Lesley Slade completed a behavioral study, Chronic Stress and Coping Strategies among Volunteer Ambulance Personnel. Radha Paramasawaran completed a project in botany entitled Determining the Mechanisms of Salt Tolerance in Invasive Japanese Knotweed. Benjamin Wienert submitted a particle physics project entitled Searching for Proton Decay:_ Lifetime Limits in the p->e-_ + _+_ Decay Mode, and Adam Borowski submitted a project in evolution entitled Natural Plant Defenses against the Herbivorous beetle Leptinotarsa.
Only 121 Long Island students were selected to participate in the regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium this year. Five finalists from each of the 48 regional symposia will receive an all-expense paid trip to compete in the national JSHS, and tuition scholarships totaling $3,000 for each region's top three participants.
The 2007 National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium will take place May 2 through 6 in Huntsville, Alabama.
