On Thursday, July 20, longtime Plainview resident and Nassau Community College Environmental Science Professor Ivan Kadar accompanied his students on a trip to the Plainview Water District. During this visit, the students learned about our water supply and its place in the environment from the Plainview Water District commissioners and employees.
Plainview Water District Plant Operator Mike Gele and Administrative Treasurer Melisa Borg presented a 45-minute long PowerPoint presentation on the source, quality and quantity of our water supply. Students were also provided with information on the need for water conservation and groundwater pollution prevention along with a tour of a water supply facility. Gele provided a hands-on demonstration of the Long Island aquifer system with the use of a groundwater stimulator, which enhanced the student-learning experience through the use of a visual working model. Plainview Water District Commissioners Langberg, Kessler and Shulroff were pleased to be a part of this educational lesson, during which they spoke and answered questions regarding our water supply. Commissioner Langberg stated, "It is important for these students to directly see how our water system works in the environment. We are pleased to take this opportunity to help them better understand our role in maintaining quality drinking water and a safe, comfortable environment."
