The second squad recently reported the arrest of an East Northport man on Tuesday May 9 at 5:53 p.m. for an assault, which occurred in Plainview.
According to detectives, the defendant David Palacio was observed operating his 1999 Suzuki motorcycle in an unsafe manner eastbound in the vicinity of exit 39 on the Long Island Expressway. When a police officer in a marked police vehicle attempted to pull him over, he sped away. The officer followed the defendant at a safe distance with his lights and siren off giving location updates to other responding officers. As the defendant approached exit 46, traffic came to a stop and he pulled his motorcycle over on the shoulder. As responding officers were attempting to remove the defendant from his motorcycle, he accelerated dragging police officer Michael Vonnes, police state.
The motorcycle then struck a police vehicle causing officer Vonnes to be thrown over the hood to the ground. It took several officers to place the resisting defendant under arrest.
Both the defendant and the police officer were transported to Nassau University Medical Center where the defendant was treated for minor injuries and then brought to the 2nd squad for arrest processing. Officer Vonnes sustained injuries to his back, shoulder and neck. There was also approximately $1,000 in damages done to the police vehicle.
While in the holding cell of the 2nd precinct station house arrest processing room, the defendant allegedly kicked the cell door, and broke the locking mechanism. As the cell door opened, the defendant again had to be restrained by police officers.
Palacio was charged with assault in the 2nd degree, criminal mischief in the 4th degree as well as multiple vehicle and traffic law violations and was arraigned May 10. Additional charges are pending.
