Jill Martin with Jon Tisch, CEO of the Loews hotels.

Jill Dorfman, professionally known as Jill Martin, graduated from Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School in 1994. She then attended the University of Michigan where she majored in communications and received her Bachelor of Arts degree.

After graduation, her career flourished landing jobs on the Maury Povich Show, Good Morning America, News12 and then getting her own show on WAMI, a Miami station. She then worked for the Miami Heat and currently is a sports anchor for CBS in Miami.

"Being in the news business, I saw a lot of coverage of Hurricane Katrina and the devastation that it caused," said Martin. "I saw a man hanging on for his life who had to chose between saving his wife or his kids. I knew I had to do something."

Saddened by the horror of Katrina, Martin realized that she could help. She decided to organize and chair a fundraiser to benefit the victims. She contacted Jon Tisch, CEO of the Loews hotels, asking if she could use the hotel. This idea turned into a great event dubbed "Miami Rocks for Relief," which was held Sept. 30 at the Loews Hotel in Miami.

Ocean Drive magazine, CBS 4-WFOR, Estefan Enterprises, Emeril's, The Insider, The Loews Miami Beach Hotel, Clear Channel Radio Broadcasting and Sports Talk 790 THE TICKET all teamed up for the concert, which was held at Loews Miami Beach Hotel on the beach in a tented area.

Gloria Estefan and Queen Latifah both performed at the star-studded benefit and HBO's Entourage star Adrian Grenier was in attendance as well. The Insider's host Pat O'Brien was the emcee.

Prior to the concert, which included a special performance by rock band The Honey Brothers, Chef Emeril Lagasse, New Orleans' most famous restaurateur and celebrity Chef Norman Van Aken hosted a VIP sit-down dinner. Also, during an auction, Emeril offered to go to the highest bidder's house and cook dinner for the winner and 10 friends - an item that went for $110,000. After Martin saw the bidding wars, she convinced Emeril to do this twice and they each went for $110,000.

The concert and benefit raised $750,000 and the funds went to CBS 4's Neighbors 4 Neighbors, The Emeril Lagasse Foundation, Workers Disaster Relief Fund, MusiCares Hurricane Relief Fund and The American Red Cross.

"It was nothing that I envisioned - it was so much more," said Martin. "It was amazing and the best night of my life mostly because it was about doing the right thing and everyone had a great time."

Martin's mother and brother flew into Miami to share the event with Jill. "It was truly one of the best nights of my life, and my son Jonathan and I were thrilled to share it with Jill," said proud mom Georgette Dorfman.
