Sports enthusiasts in Bethpage will have a new destination in the spring of 2006, the expected completion date for the development of Borella Field into three baseball fields...two Little League diamonds and one regulation diamond...as well as one soccer field, according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto (third from left) checks on the progress of work at Borella Field. Looking over the architect's renderings are (left to right) Frank Asselta, president of Bethpage Police Activity League Soccer and Ptl. George McLaren.

"The Town of Oyster Bay has a parks system that is second to none," said Venditto. "The acquisition and development of the 10.27-acre Borella Field into much-needed playing fields for sports leagues will ensure that this important recreational facility will be preserved forever for the enjoyment and use of all Town residents."

Venditto went on to say that in addition to the playing fields, the Borella Field complex, which is located on the west side of Plainview Road just north of Fams Drive, will have a complete irrigation system and a new, paved parking area.

"The Borella Field complex is just one of the exciting new parks that is being made possible with SEA (Save Environmental Assets) Fund money," Venditto said. "By acquiring this valuable parkland from the Bethpage School District, we are expanding recreational opportunities for the entire Bethpage community and beyond.

"New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg once said, 'Great cities are defined as much by their parks and open spaces as they are by their architecture,' and I believe the same can be said of the importance of parks in suburban communities," Supervisor Venditto commented. "They make a major contribution to the aesthetic quality of our neighborhoods. They also help prevent social problems by providing positive alternatives for youth. I am proud of what my administration has accomplished with regard to parks, from the most sweeping parks improvement and enhancement program in the Town's history to the acquisition of more than 79 acres of parkland and open space. The Borella Field complex will be a centerpiece for the community and will offer our young people top-flight playing fields. I look forward to seeing this complex become a hub of activity for the many sports leagues that are already lining up top use it."
