As each day brings cooler and chillier weather we non-Floridians must make our plans for the coming of the darker days of winter.

Getting dark at 6 p.m. eliminates many opportunities for sunset strolls and forecloses many evening activities. Only careful planning will avert the lonely, shadowy days that will soon envelop us.

What can we do?

Taking courses at local high schools and universities will occupy the time and quite possibly cause us to learn something. Whether it be Shakespeare or watercolor painting or even autobiographical writing the student in each of us rises to the surface.

Local libraries are a great source for learning.

Going to the gym is another energy-burner in the midst of October, November, December, January and February. In the heat of summer the gym is too dank and sweaty, but as the year closes, the treadmill, the stationary bicycle and the lifting of weights becomes the only game in town. Joining a swim club is a wonderful idea, but don't forget to bundle up when leaving the pool.

Setting up a doubles tennis game indoors is also a great idea. You need at least six players because someone is always dashing off to Florida or catching a cold and can't make the game. Hitting that chartreuse ball as it comes over the net can lower your tensions and bring you peace. Actually setting up two or more games is even better, but it starts to get expensive. Also don't join a game with people you aren't fond of as this can lead to frustration, something you are trying to avoid.

Games are another way to pass a snowy evening. A friendly poker game is always fun. Texas Hold-em has become quite popular recently. Canasta, bridge and mah-jong will also hold your interest.

Getting tickets to the theater is another way of passing a pleasant winter evening. If the tickets are a few weeks or months in the future, you will have something to look forward to and dote on for awhile.

I would appreciate that some of my wonderful readers should e-mail me at shgreenbug@aol.com with ideas for passing the days ahead. Please notice that I have not mentioned skiing or ice skating as I can perform neither of these activities.

Have a great winter.
