Wohl, who has been the district chairperson for the past eight years, was recognized because of the excellence of her program at Plainview-Old Bethpage. During her time with the district, registration for the advanced placement courses in social studies has more than doubled in all five of the offered classes. Even with this increased enrollment, student performance on the advanced placement tests has still been at an all-time high, with most students receiving a score of 3 or better. Through curriculum writing on every level, Wohl has developed congruence and equality of instruction in all four elementary schools, two middle schools, and on each grade level in high school. Wohl and her staff have also been recognized by the College Board (located in New Jersey) for having the best Advanced Placement Macro-Economics program in the world during the 2003-04 school year. As a result, Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School was recognized as a national pacesetter in the large-school category.
Wohl served as assistant principal at August Martin High School in Queens after teaching in New York City high schools for many years. She then went on to become the Director of English and Social Studies at the Amityville School District for five years. Wohl is currently a member of both the New York State Council for the Social Studies and the National Council for the Social Studies. She received her B.A. at Brooklyn College, M.A. at New York University, and her P.D. from C.W. Post College (Brookville).
Dorothy resides in East Meadow with her husband, Jack who is an Assistant District Attorney in the Queens D.A. Office. Together they have three grown children, Michele, Philip and Lisa and three grandchildren, William (6), Jordan (7) and Meredith (10). In her spare time, she enjoys reading, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.
