Join the last dedicated few walkers as they struggle through those final, trying laps of the Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a community-wide fundraiser organized by the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District, which is held to honor those who have been affected by cancer, either as victims or those who have been caretakers to victims.
Relaying refers to walking through the night around a track as a symbol of the spirit and resolve of cancer patients who fight the disease, day and night. Relay teams set up camp at the track with materials to help them make it through the night. Among the many different exciting activities will be a magic show, followed by an animal show. Participants will also be working on a huge quilt whose individual patches tell different stories of survival. At nightfall, a Luminary Ceremony takes place. Hundreds of bags bearing the names of those who have battled cancer will have been placed around the track, and candles inside these bags will be lit - creating a stunning visual affect.
