Over the years the Concerned Citizens of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Community, Inc. have reached out numerous times to Anton Press as a vehicle to inform our friends and neighbors on other issues that have posed a threat to our environment and quality of life. My letter, which was inadvertently not printed in its entirety last week, was written in an effort to create awareness amongst your readership regarding Proposition #3-The Bus Referendum that appeared on the May 17 ballot.
Proposition #3 was a referendum placed on the ballot by a resident to repeal universal busing. As many in the community are aware, the concerns of the masses were heard and the referendum was defeated. In fact, voter registration and voter turnout was unprecedented.
I would also like to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the "Keep the Buses Rolling" volunteers who worked with us on our awareness campaign, alongside all the other child centered organizations in the community such as: the Friends of the Library, the POB Athletic Booster Club, POB-PAL, POB Little League Baseball, the PTA's and all the other groups who champion for our children. Of course, without the efforts of the original Universal Busing Committee six years ago headed by Jayne Smilowitz, Laura and Michael Saxman, there would have been no universal busing to preserve.
In closing, it was great to see such community spirit. Many thanks to all those residents who came out in droves on super Tuesday to support our children, our schools, our library, and our community.
