Sterling Glen of Plainview, an assisted living senior residence in Plainview, New York, recently donated $8,000 to the nearby Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center (JCC). The funds are earmarked for enhanced programming and services both at the JCC and within the local community for seniors.

"Building stronger communities is a priority for Sterling Glen in the neighborhoods in which our residences are based," said Coleen McAleavey, executive director of Sterling Glen of Plainview. "This donation is an example of our commitment to that goal. We support the JCC's full range of programs and look forward to working with them to create even more activities that match the needs and interests of seniors."
For more than five years, Sterling Glen of Plainview has collaborated with the Mid-Island Y JCC to provide cultural, recreational and intergenerational activities for seniors. Programs at the JCC include art history, opera and cooking classes; a choral group; a theater club; exercise classes; and a current events discussion group. In addition, Sterling Glen residents frequently volunteer at the JCC's nursery school, where they lead story time sessions and games for the three- and four-year-olds. Over the holidays, the youngsters visited Sterling Glen of Plainview to sing holiday songs with the residents.
Sterling Glen of Plainview also partners with Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School and Half Hollow Hills High School in Dix Hills, as well as local church and temple groups, to provide community outreach and intergenerational programming.
Students from Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School can learn about healthcare careers at Sterling Glen of Plainview while completing their school's 50-hour career internship program. Sterling Glen also hosts the annual Robot Rally, a public demonstration of a robot designed and built by Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School students. After the Robot Rally, the robot is entered into a national robotics competition sponsored by For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology (FIRST).
