In the past, several incidents of predators posing as public utility workers in certain areas of Long Island have occurred. The Plainview Water District is committed to the personal safety of its customers and has strict rules that its workers abide by to help ensure that residents know that they are legitimate employees of the Water District. The Water District also strongly advises residents to be vigilant to minimize any risk to their safety by knowing these rules and watching out for any suspicious activity. It is important to note that there have been no incidents of crime in the Plainview Water District community due to dangerous individuals posing as Water District employees.
All Plainview Water District personnel carry photo identification cards, which customers should ask to see prior to allowing them access to their residence. In almost all cases, a Water District official will not visit a customer's home unless an appointment has already been made to do so. Additionally, customers should take note that all Water District employees travel to customers' homes in an official Water District vehicle. The Water District participates in the Nassau County Police Department's "Crimes Against the Elderly" program, to help protect some of the community's most vulnerable members.
"The Plainview Water District's number one priority is the safety and well being of our customers. If you suspect that an individual is an imposter utility worker, you should contact the Water District's customer service department in order to verify the individual's identity. Customer service representatives are trained to recognize the identities of all Water District employees and can confirm their assigned work locations. If there is an imminent danger to your personal safety, please call 911 immediately," said Joel Kessler, chairman of the Plainview Water District Board of Commissioners.
